My grandma’s daddy used to stay over here, Buddy Nichols. He used to shine shoes and I used to come when I got out of school. He would shine shoes and I would clean up around here for him. There would be a couple of nickels I’d find, and I could buy a soda. I used to hear music here and they played bingo. Everyone would come here all the time back in the day. They were decent people that got along good and no one was saying what are you doing in here. It was a good place. I still think about my grandpa all the time. I reminisce about him when I’m walking around and looking at the place and think about all those years ago. Buddy was a good person. He was tall, a little weight on him but not too much and he loved to shine the shoes. If it was warm outside he’d sit outside and if it was raining he’d would be inside. It cost $2 to $3 to get your shoes shined. I helped him clean the caretaker’s cottage where he stayed. It’s how I learned how to work. I love these old floors. They have been here since I was young.
