Alexey Marti Heats Up Frida Fest
The 100 Men Hall presents Cuban percussionist Alexey Martí and his band, Saturday, July 13, at 9 p.m. for the Frida Fest After Party. Frida Fest is Bay Saint Louis' largest second Saturday event.
Alexey Martí was born in Havana in 1975. He started playing congas in the home of his grandparents during Santería religious ceremonies and soon began studying percussion under the legendary Oscar Valdés, a former member of the Cuban supergroup Irakere, and one of the first to incorporate the traditional batá drums into modern Cuban jazz.
Martí moved to New Orleans in 2008 to study jazz composition at the University of New Orleans. He has since gotten married and settled in the Crescent City, becoming a much-beloved fixture on the local music scene.
He released his debut album, “Travesia” (“Crossing”) in 2017, which the writer Geraldine Wyckoff praised as “magnificent” in a review for OffBeat magazine. Martí followed up Travesia with “Mundo.”
Tickets are $10 in advance, and $15 at the door. All tickets will be at WILL CALL.
