Marilyn Smith

DAY 077 Marilyn Smith photographed exclusively for the 100 Men Hall People Project (100MHPP).

My parents used to come here - Edward and Catherine Isham would come to dances and the manless weddings. Our parents were so creative; they would do the entertainment; it was a family affair. Everywhere they went, we went. That manless wedding traveled around Mississippi and Louisiana, and they would go and perform. My uncle (Joseph Gilbert – my mother’s brother), he would sing like Elvis Presley and all the girls would fall out. My dad, Ed, was in construction and they were always there to help and he was instrumental with building the float. It was a woman’s creation. Lula Fairconnetue (she was a Fairconnetue) and they were very smart and creative; she wrote the whole script for the manless wedding. The other kids were the acts between acts – like the photo up [on the wall] with Goldie, Darlene and Deborah. There was never a dull moment in our lives.
